  • How to take individual slides out and have as separate pictures: Go to save as: window opens. Leave normal file name but 'save as type' needs to be changed to: JPEG file. Click on save and you will prompted to select 'every slide' and all pictures will be saved into the folder where the powerpoint has been saved.
  • If you optimise the powerpoint first, then when you place on the web, it will be compressed ready to uploading. Good size for files - as small as you can make it when it appears on screen.
  • Differences between picture files: GIF: good for lots of solid colours; JPEG: good for anything; PNG: good for anything but better quality.
  • Good Powerpoint video to share with kids: click on Don McMillan link in PowerPoint for today.

ANIMOTO:

Day 2: Session 1

Chris revised the concept of back channeling to use as a management tool which allows you to set up a web page and you can all write on that web page at the same time and we can all collaborate and share our experiences.

Setting up from stratch:

  • Bottom of Shambles page - there is a list of back channel tools - using pirate pad
  • When you arrive at the page you can click on create a new pad or you can give it a customise name.
  • You do that by typing it in the address - so added into the address - http://piratepad.net/googlesocial
  • If this 'document is free, then you can create it and go there.
  • We then went to the page - be sure there is no 'www' or the site may not work.
  • We didn't sign it but the colours identified the different users. These colours can be identiifed in the tool bar on the side if you want to have names appear.
  • Chat roulette is website set up by a teenager in Russia and all it does is connect with different people with a video camera. Not a good idea!! Press a button and you connect with someone randomly.
  • If you to pad options and authorship colour you can take them off.
  • Click on 'saved revisions' to save snapshots/versions of the document as it evolves.
  • The 'timeslider' button keeps the timeline of save. Good for kids to see a timeline of their brainstorming.
  • This version is very easy quick to set up and not secure. Deleting is an issue so be careful if you are doing anything confidential.
  • Original company was Etherpad.com which started pirate pad and they offered higher admin for free but it closed down just recently because they were bought by Google but Google bought it to use in 'google wave' but they will make it open sources and available and free. So ask techs to download open source software, put in on the server and add in prvacy aspects you want.
  • Another possibility which has facilities - http://www.sync.in/

BROWSERS:

We talked about the different browsers. Chrome was discussed and was considered fast to use. Firefox is used today because you can change the icons on the tool bar so that it is easier to see when presetning. You have also change the size of the pointer for presentations.

How to organise your work:

With your browswer you have bookmarks.

Delicious is a website which allows you to save your bookmarks and share them with others more easily. It enables me to find other people and see what bookmarks they have - e.g. search for other librarians, physics teachers, etc. It's a social network where you can save your bookmarks, access anywhere, and you can make public. You can also describe the sites and tag it and it prompts you and a reminder as to what the web site is.

GOOGLE:

  • A page on shambles about the different browsers - search for the word browser. You tube video "What is a browser?"
  • Study search for Google. It is a custom search from Google - choose Primary and/or secondary and they will choose the appropriate level for their students. Ed Dept and Google got together and got this sorted. Kids can find things that are suitable but at their level. There is a facility in Google which allows you to do this yourself. You can do a customised Google search engine. Type in 'customer search engine' into google and the page
  • Search You Tube for videos on how to do 'customer search engine' on our school site. www.google.com/cse/
  • Slide share powerpoint on how to search using google with tips on inverted commas, boolean searches, etc.
  • Used term bog bodies to search all of the elements on the left hand side. Showed the children about the differences.
  • Click on Sydney and click on latest and then click on latest and you will see the news 'evolve' in real time - almost. Can filter to take out twitter? Not sure.
  • In advanced search you can take out the twitter element. Do 'syeney - twitter search or use the advanced search and enter twitter as the word you don't want to see.
  • When you do an image or video search, on the right of the search box - safe search moderate box - you can set the limits here as a teacher.
  • The wonder wheel on the right hand side offers a mind mapping tool.
  • Look at 'search in plain english' videos by common craft - very helpful
  • Visual search engines - be careful with content.
  • Way back machine - if a website is being closed down you can find it with the way back machine - http://www.archive.org/
  • Google labs - look at google goggles!

GOOGLE DIRECTORY:

  • http://directory.google.com/ - you can just go through and drill down the directory without searching.
  • Click on 'more' and have a play.
  • Alerts - I'm interseted in 'volcanoes' - google will email you when new things about volcanoes appear. You can state how often the alerts will be
  • Blog search - if you are working with a specialist teacher and they want to find blogs from other specialist teachers, you can use this tool. It also brings up individual posts as well.
  • Image search - If your school block image search - go to shambles website and seach for image search the second link will offer 50 links to places to safely send kids to for images they can use legally in their work. Good to teach students to other places beyond Google where they are creative commons and copyright free anyhow. Another way to help students is digital citizenship which alerts them to 'issues' about creative commons, etc.
  • More resources available on this topic - in Shambles website, type in plagiarism and you will find a page purely about this topic. Content about creative commons available on this site. Good starting point for discussions with students about their work. There is a 'creative commons' website for Australia.
  • Search shamebles website for 'information literacy' there are lots of materials available. Here there are search lessons under the Internet heading with lots of materials you can use.
  • On Shambles website - www.shambles.net/safesearching/ to give you safe search engines. Look at 'Kids click' website. On the bottom, look at the link which says 'what does this page look through a librarian's eyes?' - converts to Dewey!

I GOOGLE:

  • It's a webpage and portal you can design yourself. Move things around and change things to suit. Personalise your page.

GOOGLE DOCS:

  • Like word but not as powerful. Most functionality that you need; it's free; saved online; and it's collaborative. Make private or public - full control. Word processer, spreadsheet and presentation (like poweproint). If you have Microsoft documents and they can be uploaded to Google docs and most formatting stay.
  • 'Share' button - invite people who have a 'docs' account to be able to view and/or edit your document. You can publish as a static webpage. If you get a 'messy URL address' you can use a webpage to shorten the web address.
  • Copy the long address and go to http://www.bitly/ Paste the URL you have and it will conver the address to make it shorter. You have make it even easier by clicking on customise and make specific changes. List of options for converting addresses on shambles website.
  • Bit.ly is good option because when you have an account it will give you stats on who has clikced on your changed address and where they have clicked from.
  • Australia trove - search engine from Australian National Library - works best with IE.

Look at wallwisher.com and do a google search for wallwisher for the classroom.

Google apps, drop box and evernote (INFORMATION MANAGEMENT TOOL). - Chris' favourite sites/apps.

pb wiki - explore

If you use a spreadsheet , on the right hand side, there is a chat box while you are working on spreadshhet. This capacity is to come to google docs - but will be overcome through using skype. Google voice is coming.

Somewhere in google docs there is an option to download from google docs and have on your own PC then go back up to sync yoru files.

backupify.com enables you to sign up - tell them your gmail docs - and every week it will back up your google docs somewhere else beside google - from the cloud to the cloud.

In google docs you can now draw and there is a 5/6 second lag as they collaborate - chat feature enabled on right side as it appears.

Google docs - forms - enables you to build a survey and automatically put into a spreadsheet. You can then get a screen shot of all the different responses. But google don't let you print it easily - yet!

Google mobile iphone app. Can go to an app from Google and 'say' sydney opera house and then it will download.

Moderator useful with a group of kids if you are having debates

Google moon gets you closer to the moon - and then it turns into cheese

Google oceans - lots to explore.

ABC has a lot of overlays from Gallipoli, etc for Google earth.

Google about to release an operating system called Chrome. - could be good for smaller laptops??

Day 1: Session 3

Ideas from the afternoon session:

  • If you have a powerpoint to share, you put it on Slideshare.
  • Video goes on You Tube - or if you want to be more protective, you use Teacher Tube or Classroom Tube.
  • If you have a regular file to share e.g. Word document - then search for file uploading on Shambles website, and you will find a list of places where you can put files online free. Chris uses 'dropbox' but it is more of a committment. We used Drop.io - and we didn't create an account. It gives me a web address for the file http://drop.io/ynmb2ce The website creates a new 'drop name' for each file. Find the file you want to share - Chris chose the head teacher's video - and then create the drop. If you want more control, create an account and use the controls. Can access from a mobile device.

PODCASTING:

  • www.shambles.net/pages/staff/textspeech - for free options. Some just let you type in the text and it 'reads' it to you from a website.
  • Podcasting - It's about text to speech.
  • Text Aloud was used in our session but it is NOT free. Some voices are free but others have to be paid for.
  • Some changes re the voice and or spelling/phonics can be a teaching point.
  • In Text Aloud, there is an option called 'Speak'. There is also a 'Speak to file' button - speak and it will save as a MP3 file which can be uploaded to a blog.
  • Talked about organising bookmarks - can pay off and empower.
  • We are going to learn how to create a podcast, add music, and other 'stuff'.
  • We tested the microphone to check it worked OK.

Audacity:

  • Start recording and move the sound control so that the mircophone is along the scale.
  • If the sound goes beyond the boundaries, then it will be distroted.
  • Test interview with inanimate object: a cookie to raise awarenes of the contents of a cokkie and why it is important, etc. Remember to delete the test before you start interview!
  • Materials: orange juice box - why are you that shape, size, etc.
  • Interview people in history - Einstein, or better still, Einstein's mother!
  • Time frame - set parameters - suggested no more than 3 minutes - better to be 2.
  • Now the file must be saved - File: Save project as: browse and save - .aup extension - not a MP3 file.
  • When you look where you saved the file, you will see Audacity save two things - the .aup file. Double click and it opens in Audacity. There is also a folder - leave these files alone. This folder contains the 'bits' of the file which has been recorded.
  • To edit: click and drag bits you want to change/delete. Highlight where there is 'nothing happening' and edit appropriately.
  • If you scroll about half wasy, highlight part you want to make louder - click and drag. To make this 'bit' louder, click on effect: amplify It will default to a number but often wise to go a little lower.
  • To make softer, effects: amplify and use negative numbers to negate what was previously done.
  • You can emphasise and/or reduce bits.
  • Highlight and play a section. You can mark bits and play them to work on them and edit.
  • If only a little bit to edit, magnify by using maginifying glass and zoom in to where you want to edit.
  • Now adding music to fade in and out. First thing is get music. There's an area on Shambles - and search for copyright free music for lots of sites where you can legally get music.
  • Kids could make music if you cannot find what you want. There are websites they can use. List of shambles if you search - 'editing music'. Doesn't matter how long it is because you can chop it to suit.
  • How do you import it? Just drag the music into Audacity. We will highlight the music we don't want - only make it a short time. Click to magnify so you can see the music part clearly. Move the voice along so that it starts after the music plays for a bit. To move the track, click on double headed arrow to where you want it to go. Then toggle it off again.
  • Highlight music at the beginning 5 to 10 seconds. the effects, amplify, fade in. Then do fade out same way so music fades in and out before interview starts.
  • Music can go through whole interview and keep very very low. Need new track for new sound.
  • Kids voices, computer voices, any MP3 can be dragged into Audacity.
  • .aup plays only in Audacity. mp3 and wav are sound files.
  • Save file and aup file and then export as a wav file. Then export as a mp3 file. mp3 file will ask for information in a pop up window. Title; Artist; Genre - fill in what you want.
  • Then compare the wav (best quality) and mp3 file.
  • Sound recorders could be used by children to record what they want and then upload the file into Audacity. Change source from Audacity to 'line in'.
  • Can get an error message re copyright when saving as an mp3 file. We had to download Lame for audacity software so that it could cope with mp3 files.

How to broadcast out podcast:

  • We are going to find somewhere to host the podcast
  • Then we will upload
  • Then we will make it so it can be embedded into a blog
  • Then going to look at how you can find other podcasts - a podcast directory - aggregator

BBC podcast - on blogs and pods - every week they offer podcasts on different topics.

  • Lots of different place to host audio files so people can subscribe and listen to them. Podcaster, odio. Chris recommends podbean - free.
  • http://www.podbean.com/ - log in and you see a page of podcasts.
  • You can search for people's podcasts and offer classroom resources through these podcasts.
  • We want to add a podcast but don't click on the 'add a podcast' tag. We want to 'publish a podcast' so click on this tag.
  • Arrive at dashboard inside podbean.
  • Upload the file first. Click upload - browse window opens and you select the file. mp3 file will be quicker to upload. Some browsers have problems and will stay at zero and then all of a sudden will say 'done' so be patient and wait.
  • Choose 'publish'. In 'tag' type in some keywords. In title put an appropriate title. All of this is editable. In Post put a description.
  • Now select the file you are going to connect to this informaiotn. Choose if from the list. Leave duration empty as it will work it out automatically. Then click on Publish.
  • F5 to refresh!
  • If you want to embed into blog, you do it the by clicking on the 'embeddable player'. Two options to choose from. Click in the box you choose and copy and then paste it into the blog. The file actually streams from the podbean site. Just like You Tube streams from the You Tube site.
  • You can upload podcasts to your school server if you have podcast software on the server. Talk to technician if you want to host podcasts on school server for more control. This server has nobody to maintain on the weekend and at nights so Chris felt it was more secure at podbean and it was cheaper for the school.

If You Tube is blocked - what can I do- will they scucessfuly embed in blog??? Still has to go to You Tube so may still be blocked.

  • A solution is: You download the video from You Tube. To download - look at Shambles page and search 'video download'. Go to first result and then go to 'keep vid' link Copy the web address and copy into keepvid site and download. Sometimes options will appear from low quality to higher quality. Click on one and then it will download it to you computer. When downloaded the video, in blogger you will need to select 'upload a video' and upload to Google so that it won't be blocked.

Last 2 things:

Where to find podcast that are useful by students.

  • itunes - to organise music. There is a section called podcasts. Chris subscribes to podcasts - e.g. Best of You tube;Pod castle (fiction); pods and blogs; smart board lesson; Ted talks(some are video podcasts);
  • How to you find them - go to itunes store and they have a podcast button. Do a search for whatever you want and click on subscribe.
  • Itunesu button - is for university lectures and materials.
  • Find podcasts on topics for 'older teachers' and engage them in that way.

If you are using Skype and you are interviewing someone. you can record. It's difficult to record Skype using Audacity. Use Shambles and search - recording skype. Look at info on voice over IP and look at link called 'recording skype using MP3 skype records v.1.9.0 http://voipcallrecording.com/ - this works for Skype.

  • Audio boo - another way of doing a podcast using a phone. It's an app for an iphone.

Look at rubric sites for podcasts.

Day 1: Session 2

  • Search for an application called xmark and download to change bookmarks on one browser and have it change on all browsers you use.
  • How to best find blogs?? Go go google and click on 'more' and then choose blogs and it will automaticallly only search blogs.
  • Search engine purely to find blogs - called http://www.technorati.com/
  • http://www.classblogmeister.com/ - different blog hosting site to blogger. Made by David Warlick in the US. He wanted one place to set up blogs for his students and have complete control over them - very secure and safe. Set up platform called blogmeister. Originally only for us in US but happy for you to use.
  • When back at school and asked to speak - can use videos - "Blogs in plain english"
  • Another place to find blogs is - best education blog - the edublogawards. Check address on pirate pad.
  • All things blog - www.shambles.net/web2 Lots to look at about web2 stuff.

How to manage blogs:

  • Use RSS feeds - Aggregating things
  • Set up machine to see what you have all done in last five minutes.
  • Easy way to check the work of a whole class.
  • Look at blogtools websites and RSS 'how to' sites

Blog examples:

  • Good examples to look at in Chris' notes
  • Idea here for blog for 'travel buddy' if it is on a journey
  • Get Powerpoint and video on blogs from Chris.

After lunch Chris will show how to distribute video to a group rather tahn giving individually.

How do you embed a you tube video into your blog:

  • Go to new post;
  • give title
  • Go back to you tube and find video. Most of the time there will be an 'embed' button at the bottom. Some creators will not allow.
  • Click on embed - look at options down the bottom - different sizes - choose 425 x 344 (Blogger width is 425 pixels)
  • Copy embedding code - right click and copy
  • Go pack to post and in post paste the code - just in 'compose' window.
  • What you will see is 'rubbish code' but when published it will offer link.

How to embed a PowerPoint into your blog:

  • There is a you tube for PowerPoints - http://www.slideshare.net/
  • Most powerpoints have an embedding code which you drop into your blogger post.
  • To upload your own you have to upload your PowerPoint and then embed into the blog.
  • Before you use slideshare, you have to create an account before you use it.
  • You have a choice to make it private and offer invitations to those you want to see it.
  • I fchildren use this, you need to discuss the copyrighting limits you give to the work you upload.
  • Teacher tube and classroom tube available. There are lots of other tubes - e.g. flight tube!

More blogger information - rather than 'Twitter' which is marco blogging.

  • Dashboard is the administration area for your blog.
  • When you want to do anything you go here and manage your blog/s
  • Click on 'create' to make another separate blog
  • View profile, edit profile. If you are making one for the class or class mascot - so add a photo
  • Add photo, edit notificaitons (if someone posts, you can receive an email). Don't have students picture and real name together. Draw a picture and use that as your profile. Use fruit, number, colour, etc.
  • You can edit your previous posts but you cannot edit posts. You can delete but not edit.
  • Monetise your site - get money every time people click on the adds on your site. Contextual adds - Google will look at your content and then select advertisements that 'match'.
  • Layout: You pick a template but here you can change it. Click and drag to change the layout. YOu can add 'gadgets' to your blog - a list to choose from in the pop up window. These add in extra things to your blog layout. There are a variety of others ones to choose from - look at choices on left hand side - e.g. basic, etc You can change the colours and fonts. The "Edit HTML" - don't go here!
  • Settings: Title of blog - can be changed + add description. Can restrcit from search engines. Lots of possibilities. Can switch comments off, make public or private. Can allow a look at on mobiles. Highly customisable!

Pirate Pad

  • How do you keep up with presenting? Choose someone to monitor for you and update you. Good strategy to manage the situation.

Italc and VNC:

  • To watch what everyone does on PCs. Free to download. http://www.italc.sourcceforge.net/ Some use this software punitively others use it to share 'good work' which is seen on a PC.
  • VNC - virtual network connection to look at and use 'your' computer.

Day 1: Session 1

All notes from this morning at on http://piratepad.net/blogsandpods

Lots of information already this morning. We started with a short clip from Ted.com (Technical entertainment design). Different experts are limited to 18 minutes to present their briefs.

He suggested that the golden rule for today is not to try to remember everything we learn but to remember what we have covered and what it can do.

We have looked at:
  • Creating a blog using http://www.blogger.com/ We walked through the steps and created our own blog. Blogger is free, abnd will probably stay fee because Google own it. there are no ads on this site. Word press is next most popular blogging program.
  • Chris talked about pirate pad - software which can be used to allow a sharing facility - http://www.piratepad.com/ Children can 'sign in' with a colour so that you can manage the 'conversations. Use in a staff meeting?? Once the address is used it stays there 'forever'. If you want to ensure content is secure, save it regularly and you have access to to 'versions' created during the session. Pirate pad can be downloaded onto server at school and then there is an admin capacity.
  • Talked about back channeling generally - google this term and you will get 'how to' and 'tips'
  • http://www.sync.in/ is an alternative to pirate pad with with more privacy options - e.g. invite, and delete capacity.
  • Consider other browsers - e.g. http://www.googlechrome.com/
  • Chris' home page is http://www.shambles.net/
  • Talked about downloading you tube videos. You go to the specific video, click on the address, change the 'y' to a '3' and it will ask it you want to download it.

Some teaching tips:

  • When you are working with back channeling, get the children to negotiate the etiquette as they go so that is a 'owned' procedure
  • Give one child a wireless keyboard and mouse to share the ownership of the displayed informaiton - good to pass around when group of children on the floor - also interesting when you split the keyboard and mouse! Be sure to purchase quality wireless devices to ensure they have range to all parts of a classroom.
  • Investigate the purchase of a laser pointer for school
